Prepping For Prom – 12 Beauty Tips
By Selma Komisky
Prom is a special occasion and exciting time to get dressed up, but it can be a very stressful time if unprepared. Don’t wait till the last minute gals. Plan and Prep for Prom throughout the week leading up to the big day. And remember, the most becoming overall is to let your light shine for Jesus!
So here are a few simple beauty tip suggestions to make life easier. Have fun with them!
Give yourself a DIY deep-conditioning treatment
For shiny-soft and manageable hair, comb a deep conditioner through damp, clean hair and wrap your head with a towel. Let it penetrate for 10 minutes, and then rinse with cool water. You can find a wide selection of inexpensive deep conditioners at a beauty supply or drug store like CVS.
Wax or Thread Your Eyebrows:
It’s best to not put this task off. You don’t want un-tweezed brows, irritated red skin or an allergic reaction due to wax on your prom day. Get your brows groomed during the week with time. Brows that are clean tweezed and arched will open up your eyes and frame your face.
Get a Tan
If you want a sun kissed glow about your skin for prom, then getting a spray tan is your best bet. Make sure you do this two weeks ahead in case your tan needs to fade or you were not happy with the way it turned out. You still have time to recover for prom. If a spray tan isn’t your thin, using a bronzing powder can also give you that healthy glow as well. Choose a non-orange bronzer. It should look more light brown than orange. Of course, you could always consider going with your own lovely natural tone complexion. This is youthful and fresh and just as pretty. Make sure you choose a foundation that matches your skin tone and blend in well along the jaw line. This will give that flawless look to your skin – like you’re hardly wearing any make-up!
Get a pedicure and manicure
Give your feet and hands a treat. Pumice your feet to make your heels nice and smooth and paint your toe nails a color that pops and makes your feet look great in your high heels. Also, get your nails manicured and polished or get a set of acrylic nails applied for fun. Another option is picking a nice gel nail polish because it tends to last longer and helps prevent chipping and makes them shine. You can save money and DIY, or go to a salon for your special occasion.
Shave and Moisturize
You don’t want stubble so buy a good a razor to shave your legs and underarms. Use shaving gel and shave your legs in a warm shower. Prevent razor burn by gently starting at the base of your ankle and gently pull it up over your whole leg, going the same direction. Be sure to rinse your blade between every stroke blade and start with a new razor because a dull blade can lead to nicks and irritation. You will have nice and silky smooth look. Then use a rich moisturizer and use generously so your skin is soft all day. Try a Gillette Venus Swirl Razor, or a Shick Hydro Silk Razor.
Pick your eyes or your mouth
The biggest mistake girls make when putting on makeup is that they highlight both the eye and the mouth. You need to pick one or the other. Rule of thumb if you choose to focus on your lips, you’ll want to go bright. Red and dark pinks are fun for prom, but make sure you keep your eye makeup soft and simple. If you want to play up your eyes, go all out with liner, a smoky eye or a nice shadow, mascara and perhaps even false eyelashes. Just make sure you stick with light nude lips with a light gloss. A soft taupe nude or pinky brown nude colors are perfect!
Get a mini-facial and help for blemishes
Blemishes can pop up at those most inopportune times. So don’t fret – get a mini facial. This is a good way to cleanse your pores and skin and treat your acne. Don’t pick or squeeze your acne, this will just make your skin more irritated or leave a mark. Let your skin breathe for a couple of days and don’t use any make-up. This helps those blemishes heal and is just good for your complexion. In the event you still have some blemishes, use a good concealer that matches your skin tone and foundation to blend in and you will be good to go. Also, beauty colleges are great source and some provide skincare services for much cheaper then a spa. Keep in mind they are students in training!
Cut you your lashes in half
Your fake ones, that is! Strip lashes are tricky to apply. Unless you have a lot of practice, it can be complicated, so cut a strip into two and apply the half-pieces to the outer corners of your eyes for a nighttime look. During the week you have time to practice how to apply your lashes and play around with them to see how you like them. Don’t forget to buy lash glue and carry some in your purse just in case you need it at prom. Also if you don’t wear false eyelashes, use good waterproof mascara and an eyelash curler. Make sure you comb through your lashes to remove clumps. Tip: Check out Younique mascara that gives an appearance of amazingly longer lashes without having to use false eyelashes. This mascara has special fibers that lengthen and look fabulous.
Lightly spritz yourself with your favorite perfume, especially your hair since it keeps the scent a lot longer. You don’t want to spray too much and over do it. Less is more and much more pleasant to be around!
Lots of girls are wearing dark reds. Be sure to carefully pick the right shade that compliments you best. Remember to use a tissue to blot your lips afterwards, and you can apply a light powder before reapplying your lipstick to ensure it stays. Double check your teeth to see if any lipstick is on them. (It happens and don’t want that to come out in your prom pics). Color stay lipsticks are also good to try if you want the color to last without reapplications. If you’re not sure what color looks good on you, go a to Sephora or Ulta Beauty and try some samples to see how they look with your skin tone.
Simple undone hair for special occasions
The look should be natural, soft, and touchable, versus the days of hair sprayed bad prom/bridesmaid hair. Maybe you want to try a sleek ponytail and wrap a small strand of hair around the elastic rubber band for a polished nighttime look. Be sure to use a bobby pin to secure it in place and make sure it matches your hair color. Also, wearing your hair down with a small side braid or twist a small side strand for a pretty look. Gather a 1-2 inch section of hair for the braid or twist, depending on the thickness that you desire. Make sure you secure it with bobby pins to stay and finish it off by spraying a light holding hair spray.
It’s very important to use a good deodorant to protect you from perspiring and keeping bad body odor at bay. You want to walk around feeling confident and fresh. Here are some good deodorants to try: Avon liquid deodorant goes smoothly onto the skin and has a pleasant fresh light scent, Dove Advanced Beauty Clear Tone protection is ensured up to 24hrs when applied, and Burt Bees Herbal Deodorant Fresh neutralizes odor.
