How-To: Craft a Prayer Ornament
By Michele Massie
This craft activity is a powerful family and friend builder, placing Jesus at the center of it all! Last Christmas we invited friends and family over to usher in the Christmas season and once again celebrate the birth of our Savior. As I planned the party, I began to pray and ask the Lord to give me something special to do that would bring all our guests together with real hope and Christmas Joy.
“My voice You shall hear in the morning O Lord; in the morning I will direct it to You, and look up”
– Psalm 5:3
As I waited on the Lord, John 14:13-14 came to my mind: “Whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in my name I will do it.” Prayer! This prayer ornament craft activity would be the greatest gift we could impart to our guests.
With God’s direction I got busy and I made a prototype of a Christmas Prayer Ornament to house the precious Christmas prayers we would pray and write down on a small scroll of paper and insert into our individually decorated ornaments. I went to Michaels craft store, and found everything I needed at a reasonable price. If you search “clear plastic ornaments” on the website you can find the ornaments I used. Make sure you search their website for money saving coupons!
What You Will Need
- A clear fillable ornament for each guest
- Various types of decorative filling to go inside the ornament with the prayer request.
- Beautiful Ribbon to tie at the top of the ornament and use to hang on your Christmas tree.
Set a designated area to direct your guest to where they can begin designing and filling their Prayer Ornament. When your guests arrive at your celebration, offer them a heart of welcome, along with some refreshments and treats. Then invite them to design their own ornament and begin to think of a personal prayer request they would like to put inside!
Our family now does this activity every Christmas! Each year we add another prayer request to the original Christmas ornament we designed. As the years go by many prayers will go into that ornament and one day as a family we will sit around the Christmas fire and pull out all the prayer requests that have been inserted year after year, and see all the Lord has done, is doing, and will continue to do!
Remember: Family and friends that pray together stay together! Merry Christmas to us all, and may our prayers bring Christmas miracles that fill our hearts with faith, hope and love.
