This Little Life of Mine
By Savannah Lawrence
Everyday there is destruction, a new disease discovered, and a country under fire. When you live in the U.S, it doesn’t seem like it’s real. When I watch the news, it looks like a scene from a movie. As a Christian in the U.S., I become blindsided by what my own culture values and the social norms that come with it. Living in the U.S. is a dream for many, a dream that many sacrifice everything for. The question I want to ask is why do Americans refrain from putting their lives on the line? Is it because we think that our lives are so great that we don’t have to worry about a thing?
There is a lot to worry about in the U.S., especially as a Christian. We are living in a country that is fruitful and plentiful, that is superior to others. Our personal comfort does not expose the children starving or women being taken by night. That’s not the American dream. Christians have failed the mission or the call that was given to us the day we accepted Christ into our lives. That mission is to proclaim His name and live like Him. In the book of Matthew, Jesus says “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” We are called to go out and see the brokenness in the world, tend to those who have fallen, or the ones that have never been reached. Our purpose in life is to live for Jesus. There are many different ways that we can accomplish this mission.
Many Christians believe that going overseas is the best way to fulfill their purpose in life. I believe that God created specific people to use their lives in that way. We all have certain gifts, but what is stopping the rest of us? If you do not feel led to go overseas, why not become a missionary for the town you live in? We are all set apart because Christ saved us. We are called to be an example for others. There are little ways you could start fulfilling that call. You can start a change in your school, friend group, or even in your family.
We are lights. We are meant to shine in the dark. If you are in a room full of light, it is impossible for darkness to spread. We cannot be hidden, and it is important to make sure we don’t hide ourselves. Stepping out in a world that won’t always accept what you say about Jesus is scary, but He is with you every step of the way. It is amazing when the Holy Spirit speaks through you when you talk about Jesus or when you’re sharing the Gospel for the first time. There is never a moment when he is not there.
It took a while for me to get where I am today. I was constantly trying to figure out my place in the world. I never found what I was looking for, until I turned to God for guidance. I had to take the time to notice that life isn’t what it’s made up to be, it isn’t always sunshine and rainbows, especially in the U.S. I had to take off the lenses I had on from the beginning to see the world for what it really is. I encourage you to do the same. We are meant for something bigger. We have one life. Who are you living for?
