Oxymoron: The Immodest Christian
Hey guys! It’s Alyssa! I hope you guys had a wonderful New Year! So, this month, I will talk about a popular type of oxymoron in the church. Now, for those who do not know what an oxymoron is, it is basically a saying or group of words that contradict each other, like the phrase “bittersweet.” But this specific kind of oxymoron I will be talking about is called an Immodest Christian.
The definition of being immodest is lacking decency or, in other words, not dressing appropriately. Being Christian is following in Jesus’ footsteps, loving and respecting Him, and introducing others to Jesus. By respecting Him we listen to Him, right? I mean, when an adult asks for us to be respectful, do we scream at them and not listen to them? No. We would most likely will be obedient. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 says, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” This shows that by dressing modestly, you would be respecting and honoring God. It’s also coming from the Bible, God’s Word. So, by doing what it says, we are also respecting Him through obedience.
Now, you may be wondering, what exactly is considered immodest? I think immodesty is showing way too much skin and body and also very fitting clothes. Some immodest clothing examples include crop tops worn by themselves, tube tops, really short shorts and skirts, and even see-through material without a tank-top. Now, you can still wear some of these things by adding an extra piece or two to make it a little more modest. For example, I love the look of cropped hoodies, but it’s not very modest. So I wear a tank top underneath and tuck it into my pants, or throw on a bodysuit underneath so I don’t have to tuck it in (I’m really lazy). I think tank tops or even jean jackets allow you to wear certain trendy outfits while still allowing you to keep it modest! Referring back to short shorts or even skirts, you can still wear shorts, but keep it modest. If you put your arms down to your side, you can measure a modest size for shorts based on how far your arms go. But guys, don’t get me wrong! You don’t have to be covered from head to toe in clothes.
Next, I would stop and think before choosing your outfits or even buying clothes. Ask yourself, “ Would Jesus approve?,” ”Would this be showing off too much of my body?,’’ and even “ If I wear this, will I cause a man to fall into sin or lust?” I would also ask a trusted adult. I would ask my mom if a certain outfit is ok. In fact, she is the one who would tell me when something is inappropriate. So, always ask yourself whether or not a certain outfit is appropriate, and if you’re not too sure, ask a trusted adult.
So, to sum this all up, the oxymoron Immodest Christian is not respecting the body God’s giving to you and even disregarding what the Bible says about our bodies. In order to obey what the Bible says about our bodies, we can dress more modestly and thus obey God. And if we say we are a Christian, we would have to strive to listen to Him and His Word. So, by being immodest, we aren’t really trying to listen to Him.
