Why Talk About It

By Daniel Daugherty

This article is a difficult one to write. Purity isn’t something that’s gets talked a lot about with guys, even Christian guys. I remember in school they would separate the guys and girls and go to different parts of the building in order to go over the dress code. The girls would have the big, elaborate setup, and the guys would quickly go over the slideshow then do something else.

So why is it so difficult for guys to properly talk about purity and living pure? I think part of the reason may be from this stigma that guys don’t have to be pure. That even if you’re trying to be pure, you get mocked and called weird. So I asked this question on a couple of Christian Discord servers, “why is it so difficult for guys to pure in this day and age? And why isn’t it accepted by the world?” These are some of their responses:

“Because sins are so accepted by the world & even by some professing ‘christians’ so it becomes confusing when all the voices around you are saying it’s ok to do this & it’s ok to do that. They make you think you’re crazy for wanting to deny yourself sex or an unbiblical relationship. It will never cease to amaze me how the same people who say ‘what’s it hurting anyone if I’m doing this’ are the same people who will condemn you for saying ‘I don’t want to do this’”

“Because people either pretend it doesn’t exist or they think it’s fine”

1. Accessibility

It’s incredibly easy to access impure content these days – takes you five seconds on the internet, with little to no consequences if you’re careful. In the past, you’d have to physically go places and the like, which is of course much less discreet than browsing the internet.

2. Permissibility

The majority of society is fine with it, and much of society actually encourages it.

3. Laxity

Christians today, especially when not under the threat of persecution, can be very morally lax. Persecution helps us to focus on God. We live in good times with minimal persecution, therefore we easily fall. It’s a pattern repeated over and over again throughout history.”

One person gave me the verse 2 Timothy 3 1-5, which says, “But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.”

Ever since the fall in Eden, sin has been working its way throughout the world, trying to make everyone give in to impure thoughts and actions. And as guys, the world expected us to give in every time and enjoy it. We don’t have to give in though. And I know sometimes we’re gonna mess up, nobody is perfect. But there are ways to resist or fight back. You can have accountability partners, people you trust who can help you fight impure thoughts and actions. People to support you no matter what you’re

going through. And the best way, ask God to keep your thoughts and life pure. To make good decisions that will keep you from giving in.
