A Grand and Unexpected Adventure …

By Michelle Schonken

I never planned on writing or editing for a magazine. I was an English major in college, and one of the rare breeds that didn’t have an interest in pursuing writing or teaching. I was dead set on becoming a librarian after completing a master’s degree in Library and Information Science. In my master plan for my life, I really only expected to draw on my literature training from my bachelor’s degree. Then my friend Sarah called me up and asked me if I wanted to be involved in her concept before Marked Ministry was even a concrete idea. I did the Jonah maneuver and said no at first. It wasn’t in my master plan! Fortunately, Sarah had been in prayer and asked me again. In the intervening time, God taught me a few things about my plans and His plans — there is sometimes a stark difference! The second time she asked, I prayed about it and said yes.

It has been a crazy adventure since! With the conception of Marked Ministry, we simply dove in and figured everything out from scratch. At just the tip of the iceberg, I was figuring out WordPress, Sarah was cold-calling public relation managers to ask for interviews and Mamma K was contacting missionaries, all while furiously writing articles. Somehow it all came together! That first summer, we launched and represented Marked Ministry at women’s conferences; the love and support poured in from all directions.

Since then our team has multiplied. The talent, sense of fun and insight that these women bring to the Marked Ministry magazine amazes me every time we publish an issue online. These ladies are carefully prayed over and asked to join the team — and God had His plan in mind for each of them!

This July issue is our one-year anniversary. I praise God for helping us hurdle the challenges that came up throughout this year. My talents have been stretched, I’ve been taken out of my comfort zone and I have learned so much. Before this online magazine, I never thought God would stretch and develop my writing and editing skills in the way that He has. I never thought I’d have to get out of my introvert comfort zone and talk about our vision to strangers at conferences. I never thought I would be so blessed from learning about what it means to live and walk like a daughter of Christ by an amazing group of women. Of course, none of this came as a surprise to God.

So please join us for a nostalgic July issue about our one-year anniversary. Hip-hip-hooray to one year of God’s awesomeness to this fledgling online magazine! It has been a grand and unexpected adventure for me!
