The Importance of Making a Difference Together

By Madeline Carroll

When Sarah (Marked Ministry) asked me to be a part of this issue I was SO EXCITED. Writing is something I loved in school but never really took it up as a serious hobby or outlet. What’s so funny and so the Lord is that lately I have had so many people tell me “I see you writing.” And I have been praying about it a lot and then this door opened and although it scared me, I want to honor God with my obedience. You never know where God will take something and you never know how it might end up changing YOU, yes, YOU yourself when you walk through that door of obedience. You always hear people say, “ If you go for it, you never know who you will change or help.” But you also can change yourself, James 1:2-4 “Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.”

I have to say not only were people praying that over me and saying it as a thought but I also had been feeling that way. All of a sudden this creative side swelled up inside me again and I had this desire to try and write again. So our topic is, (drumroll please), MAKING A DIFFERENCE! Let’s jump into some definitions for a second and break that down literally.

So first what does it mean to make? It means: “form (something) by putting parts together or combining substances; construct; create.”

In order to make something we need to gather. In order to make something we need to combine. In order to make something it needs to be constructed.

what we learn just from that alone we see in order to make, we need to seek out, we need to seek out change! In our own worlds where can we seek out and see what isn’t right automatically, we are given something to do, and we can’t do it ALONE. God always provides assistance don’t ever feel overwhelmed and like your fighting alone. That is a lie from the enemy, you must be seeking and you will find and when you find, you must GATHER. 1 kings 19:18 says, “Yet I have reserved seven thousand in Israel, all whose knees have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.” Gather: come together, assemble, accumulate. I love that word ASSEMBLE (so much power in that). I imagine myself and friends as a powerful army!

Second, we need to COMBINE. Ideas, thoughts, resources. Combine: unite or merge. Lately since I Can Only Imagine came out, I really have been feeling the whole combining thing. What I mean by that is this, before I got ICOM, I was feeling really helpless and really, really, alone. I had been fighting a tiring and what felt like losing fight in the industry for a long time. I have been acting since three and a half but I see that I became “MAKE A DIFFERENCE” minded at around 15. Once I felt that commission of bringing change, I started getting hit really hard. I felt like giving up. I dreamed of helping other girls and being an example of not having to compromise or sacrifice your dream and calling for a lesser version where you have to do things your not OK with in order to try and “make it.” But that dream was slipping away. With each NO on a role I could do that just wasn’t booking and with each NO of the roles I was turning down that I was offered, I felt like I was never going to make a difference to anyone if I didn’t have success again. I was blinded by a thought of “if I don’t make it big and then tell my testimony, these girls will never see someone succeed who didn’t have to compromise.”

But one day I had this thought, and it was to start ministering to the girls in the audition waiting rooms! I thought of the verse that says, if your faithful with a little, I’ll make you faithful over much. I decided to do for God exactly where I was and try and make a difference right there! And what God showed me was no matter what level you are at, there is ALWAYS a need. Someone is always hurting and needs to hear about a God of peace and love and joy and just plain old encouragement! You can be used by God wherever, whenever, however! Don’t keep believing a lie I believed of having to be in a certain place before you can help, it’s a LIE, you’re good enough, you’r equipped and you’re called. God used a donkey and he can use you!

So a few months after that ICOM happened in a miracle way what happened was that my first day of meeting at the casting office was so special. I had never met or spoken with filmmakers who were trying to do the same thing as me which was: pursue the upward call of Christ Jesus and use talent to serve him and HIS PURPOSE to guess what, MAKE A DIFFERENCE! I felt so much relief as I left that office and I said to my mom, “Mom, it’s ok if I don’t get this part I’m just happy to know I’m not alone in trying to do this and bring God’s glory into the industry. But fortunately, I booked the part and this is where the COMBINING happened. We stood back to back and gathered together and made a loud noise for God in Hollywood when I Can Only Imagine came out and made an insane box office ruckus at over 80 million dollars after some articles predicted we would make 2 million tops. There is so much power in combining. Combining your own faith with prayer or combining your faith with someone else, but most importantly combining yourself to God and not letting go!

Now comes the constructing. Construct: build or erect something (typically a building, road or machine.) I love this part. Whatever we are doing to make a difference needs to last. I love the example of the building. I think of being strong and established and the road. I think of people, throngs of people, being able to come after me, come after us, and being able to continue on the journey we have paved. We are moving in a direction that is a pleasing aroma to the Lord, walking down the highway of righteousness. This is made possible because WE obeyed and we began the paving. When I think of a machine, I think of something that does it’s job to perfection. No mistakes, no mess ups, because it was created to perform that exact task. We were all designed for a specific and unique purpose. We are not all the same. We all have different tasks and abilities for God. That is why we must come together to use them. The Bible says we are a body. Does the hand not count as much as the foot? Is the left eye not as important as the right ? And finally all these come together to….make a DIFFERENCE. Difference – a point or way in which people or things are not the same. And I’ll leave you with that. Get moving!

“For if you remain completely silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. Yet who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”
