Being Proud of Your Uniqueness

By Bethany

Being unique. It’s not always easy. Trust me, I know. I’ve learned being unique is something we can’t necessarily change. Why? Because God made us unique. He made us uniquely us. There is no other one of you or me. Since we can’t change being unique, let’s learn how to embrace it. Let’s see what the Bible says about being unique. Isaiah 64:8 says this: “But now, O Lord, You are our Father; we are the clay and You are our potter; we are ALL the work of Your hand.” Imagine if you were a potter, and you had as much clay as you could imagine. You wouldn’t make just plates or bowls. Right? There wouldn’t be anything special about them because they are all the same. Wouldn’t you want to make each item special? I know I would. That’s how God is with us. He is the potter and we are the clay. He didn’t want to make everyone the same, because He wanted us to be unique in our own ways.

I’ve found it difficult to embrace being unique. Like many people, I’ve caught myself comparing myself to others. I was too busy looking at how others are unique. For example, I noticed how they have a better voice or how they are better at makeup while forgetting my own uniqueness.  Some things that make me unique are my love for people, Jesus, and animals. I also have a love and patience for little kids. What makes you unique? Go ahead and brag on yourself for a minute. Or should I say brag on what Jesus gave you. What makes you unique? Are you sporty? Do you like to do art? Do you sing? Do you dance? It’s the simple things. I promise you, there’s always going to be something unique about you.

Psalm 19:1 says: “The Heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.” The same God who created the beautiful sunrise, sunset, clouds, and oceans created and loves you so much. You are His treasure. He loves every part of you that you don’t. He loves your uniqueness.

I think it’s important to embrace your uniqueness, because God will use it in extraordinary ways. Don’t compare yourself to them. God didn’t create you to be them. He created you to be you. He knew your name before you came to be. His love for you is endless. I want to share a few of my favorite Bible verses that help me personally embrace my own uniqueness.

Psalm 139:14- “I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” This verse reminds me that I should praise God for all the things I’m good at along with the imperfections. We are FEARFULLY and WONDERFULLY made by the Creator of all things!

Jeremiah 29:11- “For I know the plans I have for You declares the Lord; plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” This verse reminds me, though some may not like my uniqueness, that God has a greater plan and my uniqueness has no negative effect on His plan for me.

Isaiah 41:9- “I took you from the ends of the earth, from its furthest corners I called you. I said, ‘you are My servant’; I have chosen you and I have not rejected you.” This verse reminds me that God knew about my uniqueness a long time before I was even born, and He CHOSE me still.

Being unique is something to be proud of. Why? Because it’s from God. He never ever makes mistakes. This means your uniqueness isn’t a mistake. OWN IT! One last time, what makes you unique? Think about it. Pick the things out. Ask a friend. Brag on yourself a little bit. Jesus loves your uniqueness, and imperfections. You are so loved!!
