Plus Size Chic: Quotes

By Sarah Komisky

Thoughts on plus size beauty:

“I guess, for me growing up, I was all bigger than my friends and family, and one thing that I always clung to was fashion. I wasn’t always the trendiest, but I loved looking at the accessories, the clothes, the color coordination. My mom’s known for her jewelry. She matches her earring to her shoes, her shoes to her belt, and I always saw them and thought: wow, that’s cool, I want to do that! So I guess within the last six or seven years I found thrifting and I became obsessed with the fact that I could buy a beautiful dress for ten bucks; I was amazed! I feel like there’s more than one size to be beautiful. Now people feel like if you want to be beautiful and want to show you are confident, you have to expose yourself. Or they feel they are confident because they are showing a little midriff or wear high-wasted jeans and a crop top. It’s like it’s not just about that. It’s about being confident in yourself, wearing a conservative, beautiful look where you can still look good and you’re comfortable. And I feel like that’s something that a lot of people (or girls at least) don’t really see now. They see the campaigns with women, yeah they are beautiful, yeah they are plus size, but they are showing a lot and it’s like, you can be beautiful even without that. You don’t have to have high-wasted jeans and a crop top, you can wear a flowy blouse and some shorts. It’s just adding your own style and just being comfortable.”

What it means to be beautiful in Jesus:

“Well number one, that’s something more or less looking at His Word. One thing that I notice when God talks about beauty is that He always talks more about the heart than He does about anything physical. That’s something I feel He weighs greatly and I’m sure He finds attractive when it comes to beauty. As for a person, I think if you really understand how God sees you then you are going to feel good either way.”

Recommendations for plus size fashion:

“I gravitate wherever there is anything plus size. I love Lane Bryant and The Avenue, those are the two stores that I always go to. But I will go to any boutique that says plus size and then I kind of look for those things that will work for my shape and body type.”

Why do these outfits make you feel beautiful?:

“One, they’re comfortable. I think comfort is key no matter what you’re wearing. I love the outfits I picked because the colors really are so inviting and warm. Even the black dress with the flowers on it, it’s very botanical, it’s fun for me and I love that island feel so I like the floral and the light colors.”

Why did you choose what you chose to wear to the shoot?:

“Number one, it looks good. I think nowadays people are trying to have their bodies try to fit into something that looks good and, I feel it should be reversed. You should look good in what looks good on your body. More than just trying to accommodate fashion, let fashion accommodate you and your style. Basically I love color, that’s just my thing. And just because of my size some people might feel like dark is better because you’re bigger and you should be seen less and I feel it’s totally the opposite.”

Thoughts on plus size beauty:

“To start with I think that I just let my inner sunshine kind of resonate out. I don’t think too much about my size, I just kind of do what makes me happy and makes me feel good. We know the layering thing all too well but sometimes we just have to let those inhibitions go and just let the love of Jesus Christ just kind of resonate out. And remember that He created you just the way you are and nobody is perfect. So having said that, it makes it easy to just live life the best that you can and make everyday count.”

Recommendations for plus size fashion:

“Eshakti.com. The one thing I love about them is that they have really vibrant textiles, nice forward but retro looks. And another thing I love about this website is that you can get these dresses, tops, bottoms, whatever, custom fitted. So you actually put in and send them your measurements and then they’ll make it to fit. So it’s really nice to finally get something that’s not ill proportioned but custom fit for you. I love Avenue’s denim, it really fits good. Torrid is good. That’s for your more party outfits for the most part, a little bit more glittery, a little more youthful but yeah, they have some really fun pieces if you want to turn up your wardrobe.”

Thoughts on plus size beauty:

“I think we’re all women and we all have that natural tendency to want to feel pretty and that’s not necessarily a makeup thing. I think it just enhances what’s already inside of us which is the joy of the Lord. It’s like frosting on a cake. Like the Lord just kind of baked us and made us into this new thing and we’re just kind of like: you know what Lord, a little extra sprinkles. I love it! We’re women at the end of the day, big, small, medium, and we all have different curves and sizes and I think it’s that joy in the Lord and having the Lord in your heart that allows you to have that acceptance to be proud of who you are. We do transition throughout our life, there’s so may different phrases and things and as you hold fast to having this confidence, it’s a little boost. And, I think as a plus size girl, you kind of got this little extra sass, you just have to shake it out a little bit (laughs). But plus size beauty is great, I love it”

Why did you choose these specific outfits to wear for this shoot?:

“Up until the last month or two, I’ve always been a jeans and t-shirt kind of girl, dress it up once in a while but I’ve only worn dresses for special events and occasions. The last couple of months for some reason I just felt like, you know what, I am going to go to Ross and I’m going to buy a dress, I’m going to see how it is, I’m going to be comfortable. So I bought a sundress and I feel in love with it and I feel in love with how easy it was to get ready. I love that I’m comfortable. I can wear prints. I’m trying to add my own thing. I love uniqueness so a lot of my stuff is vintage or it’s just really Plain Jane and I add a bunch of accessories and that’s what I did for this. I’m known (at least that’s what my friends have told me) for my bold lips. I have black, green, purple, orange, red lipstick and I love them to death. So, I kind of base my lipstick with my outfits and that’s what I’m using to kind of dress them up.”
